Tornion Yhteislyseon Lukio is an upper secondary school. Our students are 16-19 years old. We have about 450 students and 30 teachers in our school.
The school is situated in the administrative and business centre of the City of Tornio, right on the Swedish border. Its situation has thus always given it an international atmosphere, but high grade of unemployment is a serious problem. Because of its remote situation (800km to north from Helsinki, the capital) our students don’t afford to travel abroad as easily as students in the Southern Finland. To travel from Tornio to Helsinki costs as much as from Helsinki to Middle Europe. So they have to pay the double prize.
The instruction is carried out in a non-graded form and the curriculum is in a course-frame. The students have a chance of studying optional and specialized courses in addition to the common (obligatory) courses. In a non-graded upper secondary school the student can himself/herself regulate the contents and duration of the personal study programme. Duration of the studies depends on the student's goals, preparedness and own choices. The normal study time is three years. The non-graded form also contributes to added responsibility on the student's part.
The clear focus of our school is in internationalism, a natural choice for a school located on the national border. Tornio has been an international city for centuries and the direct connection to Sweden has been an easy link to Europe. After Finland joined the EU in 1995, partnership in various international projects has made internationalization even more challenging and, at the same time, has opened new cooperation channels. We have had many international activities since 1996, for example Comenius projects.
Continuously our student union co-operates with the Swedish school next to the boarder. We have been a member of a Euroschool2000 (an association of 14 European schools) network for ten years.
