Programme for 9th and final short-term exchange 15th-20th April 2018 (teachers)

Sunday 15th April. Arrival of students and teachers

All parties except our Finnish colleagues who are coming by taxi from Gatwick airport are met by Graham Hesketh and Michael McSweeney at Stansted with academy mini bus. Parties are then taken to the Travel Lodge, Birchanger, Stansted.

Hand out of information sheets and gift bag to visiting students/teachers

Orders taken for fish and chip supper (Wednesday) /teachers and students to be told they must take a form of identity with them for tomorrow otherwise they cannot get into the Houses of Parliament. Informed about the programme.

Met by students and families, taken to hosts homes, getting to know each other and surroundings/exploring.

Teachers to hotel, getting to know surroundings, planning for week ahead, exploring.

 

Monday 16th April

7.15 – Students begin arriving at school bought by families/bus/train.

7.25 – Students checked in by Joyce Frankland staff

7.30 – Group photograph for local paper.

7.45 - Leave Joyce Frankland Academy for London. All students must have a form of identity with them e.g. passport

8.00 - Pick up teachers from hotel on route to destination. All teachers must have a form of identity with them e.g. passport  

9.45 - Arrive Houses of Parliament for guided tour. Group split into three smaller groups for tours to begin at 10.15,10.20 and 10.25 at Westminster Hall. To be greeted by Kemi Badenhoch MP for Saffron Walden and Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party, member of Standing order and Justice select committees. Tour lasts approx.75 minutes

11.55 - Depart Parliament and visit to Science museum and exhibits. Parties have a choice to watch the legend of Apollo about 20 minutes (£2) each or go to the Imax cinema to watch 3D film titled A Beautiful Planet about 45 mins (£5) each or just wander about the museum have a bite to eat in its café/restaurant? (each school pays separately for their party if they wish to watch the film).    

13.45 - Leave the museum for Covent Garden. Free time in this food, shopping and cultural destination. Each school pays for its food and drink separately.

16.00 - Leave for home.

18.00 -18.30 Arrive at academy. Home with families. Teachers back to hotel to plan for next day and free time.

 

Tuesday 17th April

8.00 - 8.30 Students arrive at academy.

8.35 - Students taken to main hall where they are registered by Joyce Frankland staff.

8.55 - Take coach to aerozone at Stansted airport. Programme prepared by aerozone.

9.15 – Pick up teachers on route to destination.

9.30 - Arrive at aerozone for introductory talk on the airport and its history.

10.00 - Talk about what it is like to work at the airport from a member of Border Force a law enforcement command within the Home Office. It secures the UK border by carrying out immigration and customs controls for people and goods entering the UK.

11.00 -  Visit to the viewing platform.

11.15 - Careers talk from Vesela Ivanova Employment and Skills Manager at Stansted Airport.

12.00- End of visit take coach to Saffron Walden.

12.30-Arrival in Saffron Walden which today has its weekly market. After a brief tour around the town which will include a visit to a local chocolate maker some spare time for lunch. Each school pays for its lunch separately.

14.30 - Welcome by mayor of Saffron Walden Dr Richard Freeman at the Town hall.

15.00- Treasure hunt around Saffron Walden.

15.45 - Home to the academy.

16.00 – Students home with family’s, teachers taken to hotel by mini bus. Plan for next day and free time.

 

Wednesday 18th April

8.00 - Teachers picked up by mini bus at hotel.

8.00 - 8.30 Arrive at school teachers and students.

8.35 - Students taken to main hall to meet up with teachers.

8.50 - Address by principal of the academy Mr Gordon Farquhar. Presentations given by students from the academy about the education system of the UK.

9.30 - Tour of school. Group split into 3 parties.

9.45 – Start tour of school after lesson 1 and all settled down.

10.30 - Refreshments in library

11.00 - Take coach to Cambridge.

11.35 - Arrive Cambridge.

11.45 - Walking tour around the colleges and ‘backs’.

12.30- Spare time for shopping/ lunch. Each school pays for its lunch separately.

13.40 – Take coach to Cambridge Regional College for programme prepared by the institution

14-00 - Arrive and park in bus bay (coach to park at the front of bus bay on arrival)

14-05 - Register in Smartlife conference room

14-10 - Welcome from Michelle Dowse

14-25 - Students and staff on tour of college. Erasmus students lead by Virginia Vasconez from the international office with Daniela Munteanu.

15-25 - Students to return to Smartlife conference room for presentation from Cecilia Fisher on college offer.

15-45 - Return to buses and depart.

16.15 - Arrive back at academy picked up by hosting families. Teachers back to hotel by mini bus.

18.30 – Picked up by school mini bus from hotel for quiz evening.

19.00 – Return/arrive at the academy meet up with students and host families for a fish and chip supper and quiz evening.

22.00 – End of evening.  Students home with families.

             Teachers back to hotel by mini bus.



Thursday 19th April

8.00 - Teachers picked up by mini bus. Gabriella leaves us for London dropped off at Newport station.

8.00 - 8.30 Arrive at school.

8.35 - Students taken to main hall to meet up with teachers.

9.00 - Leave for Cambridge University

9.30 - Arrive for college tour??????

10.30 - Admissions talk by member from international recruitment team.

11.30 - Leave university.

12.00 - Arrive Astra Zeneca for programme prepared by Astra Zeneca but first lunch.

1300 - 1315 Introduction & Welcome Dr Maria Orr.

1315 -1500 Drug Discovery & Development Session (with hands on practical demonstrations) Dr Catherine Priestley, Dr Rachel Howells, Dr Maria Orr.

1500 - 1515 Break.

1515 - 1545 Virtual Lab Tour with Q&A.

1545 - 1700 Science Career Talks from AZ Graduates (including former ERASMUS students.)

1700 - 1715 Closing & Departure Dr Maria Orr.

18.00 - Arrive back at academy. Home with families. Teachers back to hotel by mini bus.

19.30 -  Mini bus takes teachers to ‘The Restaurant’ (that is its name) in Church Street, Saffron Walden for dinner at 20.00

22.30 - Mini bus back to hotel

 

Friday 20th April

4.45 – Departure of party from Estonia at Stansted airport. Flight 6.45. Anna collected by Graham for airport. Families drop off students at airport.

8.00 – Teachers picked up by mini bus.

8.00 - 8.30 Arrive at school. Luggage to be stored.

8.35 - Students taken to main hall to meet up with teachers.

9.10 - Departure of party from Finland and goodbyes.

9.15 - Fill in evaluation questionnaires in A10.

10.00 – Tea and biscuits in library

10.30 - Seminar in main hall with guest speaker Kemi Badenoch MP. Also, representatives from Stansted airport, Astra Zeneca. To discuss the topic of work and study and how this might be affected by Brexit. Questions and answers from the floor.

12.00 - End of seminar. Refreshments in the library for guests and students.

14.35 - Departure of party from Rovigo.

15.15 – Remaining students from Sicily and Poland to go home with host families.

16.00 – Departure of parties from Aguilar and Netherlands. Teachers from Poland and Sicily dropped off at hotel on route to airport.

17.00 – Departure of party from Basque Country.  

 

Saturday 21st April

5.30 - Departure of party from Sicily for 8.00 flight. Families to take guests to the airport. Graham to collect teachers from hotel.

9.00 – Departure of party from Poland for 11.20 flight. Families to take guests to airport, Graham to collect teachers from hotel.  

 

All times are approximate and subject to traffic/institutions and general conditions. At present I am still waiting for Cambridge University to fill in a one hour slot on Thursday morning.
